In the agriculture and aquaculture industries, maintaining the quality and safety of perishable goods during transportation is paramount. Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) boxes have emerged as the superior packaging solution, offering unparalleled benefits in shock absorbency, compressive strength, lightweight properties, bacterial resistance, and temperature control. Moreover, when properly cleaned, EPS boxes are recyclable, aligning with sustainable practices. The implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Product Stewardship further enhances the environmental benefits of using EPS packaging.

The Role of EPS Boxes in Reducing Food Waste

Food waste is a significant issue in Australia, with approximately 7.6 million tonnes of food wasted annually, costing the economy around $36.6 billion each year (Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water). A substantial portion of this waste occurs due to inadequate packaging that fails to preserve food during transportation and storage.

EPS boxes play a crucial role in mitigating this problem by providing exceptional insulation and protection. Unlike alternative packaging solutions such as cardboard or biodegradable materials, EPS maintains its structural integrity in wet or humid conditions, preventing premature degradation. Additionally, EPS outperforms traditional materials in thermal insulation, ensuring that perishable goods remain at stable temperatures, which is crucial for reducing spoilage. While cardboard can absorb moisture and compromise food safety, EPS resists bacterial growth and contamination, making it a safer option for transporting fresh produce and seafood, thereby extending the shelf life of perishable goods.

Fish Box

A study by Aristotle University in Greece demonstrated that broccoli stored in EPS boxes maintained its colour and nutritional value for over two weeks, significantly reducing spoilage compared to other packaging materials. The study also found that tomatoes stored in EPS boxes retained their weight, firmness, color, and nutritional composition for up to 15 days, outperforming alternative packaging solutions. This highlights EPS’s role in extending the shelf life of fresh produce and reducing food waste. (EPS UK).

Advantages of EPS Boxes in Agriculture & Aquaculture

Superior Insulation and Temperature Control

EPS boxes possess low thermal conductivity, ensuring that products remain at consistent temperatures during transit. This is vital for preserving the freshness of produce and seafood, preventing temperature fluctuations that can lead to spoilage (Styrene UAE).

Lightweight and Durable

The lightweight nature of EPS reduces transportation costs and minimizes the physical strain on handlers. Despite their lightness, EPS boxes offer high compressive strength and shock absorbency, protecting delicate items from damage during handling and transit.

Moisture Resistance and Hygiene

EPS is resistant to moisture, preventing the growth of bacteria and fungi. This characteristic is particularly beneficial for seafood packaging, where maintaining hygiene is critical (Smart Packaging Europe).

Extended Shelf Life

EPS packaging plays a crucial role in reducing food waste by ensuring perishable goods retain their quality for longer. The Aristotle University study found that EPS boxes helped maintain the weight, firmness, color, and nutritional composition of tomatoes for up to 15 days, compared to other packaging materials (EPS UK).

Recyclability

When free from significant organic contamination, EPS boxes are recyclable. Proper cleaning allows these boxes to be processed and repurposed, reducing environmental impact and promoting a circular economy.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) & Product Stewardship

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is an environmental policy approach that holds producers accountable for the entire lifecycle of their products, especially for take-back, recycling, and final disposal. One successful example of EPR implementation can be seen in the electronics industry, where manufacturers of electronic devices are required to manage the collection and proper recycling of e-waste. Programs such as the European Union’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive have significantly improved the recycling rates and proper disposal of electronic waste, reducing environmental hazards and promoting circular economy principles.

Another notable example is Lite n’ Easy, a well-known and highly successful Australian meal delivery company that successfully reuses its EPS boxes multiple times before returning them to the manufacturer for recycling. These boxes are then processed into Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) boards used for construction insulation. In the context of EPS packaging, EPR policies encourage manufacturers to design products that are easier to recycle and have a reduced environmental footprint.

Product Stewardship extends this responsibility across the entire supply chain, involving manufacturers, retailers, consumers, and recyclers in the collective effort to minimize environmental impacts (Wikipedia). By adopting EPR and Product Stewardship principles, companies in the agriculture and aquaculture sectors can ensure that EPS packaging is managed sustainably from production to end-of-life disposal.

The Link Between Packaging & Food Waste Reduction

Food waste is a massive issue worldwide, and packaging plays a crucial role in reducing waste throughout the supply chain. Studies have shown that food spoilage rates are significantly lower in regions where effective packaging solutions, such as EPS, are used.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), more than 400 million tons of fruit and vegetables and over 280 million tons of cereals are wasted each year due to poor packaging and storage conditions. In Australia, this is particularly relevant to the fresh produce sector, where inadequate packaging can lead to premature spoilage and significant losses. Many Australian farmers and food suppliers rely on EPS packaging to ensure that their produce remains fresh during transport to distribution centers and supermarkets, reducing waste at key points in the supply chain (FAO).

Our study found that on a national level, Australia loses at least an estimated 18-22 percent of its fruit and vegetable biomass during the production and processing/packing stages. Losses of up to 626 kilotonnes occur during production, and losses during packing and processing result in up to 830 kilotonnes of food waste. These losses were found to be proportionally similar to those incurred in Europe. This highlights the necessity of reliable packaging solutions like EPS to mitigate spoilage and extend the shelf life of perishable produce.

In industrialized countries, only 3% of food is wasted before it reaches stores. In contrast, developing nations see up to 50% of food loss during production and distribution. This highlights the role of proper packaging in minimizing food waste and maximizing food security (EPSA).

How Industry Can Support Sustainable EPS Use

Proper Cleaning for Recycling

> Ensuring that EPS boxes are free from organic matter and significant soiling facilitates efficient recycling processes.

Participation in EPR Programs

> Producers and users of EPS packaging should engage in EPR initiatives, contributing to the development of recycling infrastructure and the promotion of sustainable packaging solutions.

Consumer Education

> Educating consumers and industry partners about the recyclability of EPS and the importance of returning clean boxes for recycling can enhance recovery rates and reduce environmental impact.

Final Thoughts….

EPS boxes offer unmatched advantages for the agriculture and aquaculture industries, including superior protection, insulation, and hygiene. Their recyclability, when properly managed, aligns with environmental sustainability goals. By embracing Extended Producer Responsibility and Product Stewardship, stakeholders can ensure that the use of EPS packaging contributes to a more sustainable and efficient supply chain, ultimately reducing food waste and preserving valuable resources.
